Rail transport as a path to decarbonisation and climate neutrality

RegioJet is investing in the purchase of new train technology that is environmentally friendly and fully in line with our ESG strategy, which aims to purchase energy-saving assets that have a real impact on reducing emissions.

Our transport fleet includes modern, energy-efficient TRAXX MS3 locomotives, which can reduce energy consumption by up to 7%. In total, we have already purchased and ordered 31 new TRAXX MS3 locomotives over the past few years, of which 18 are in service and a further 13 will be put into service during autumn 2023. We plan to purchase more in the future, bringing dozens of new energy-efficient locomotives to the tracks.

Train transport is seen as a greener transport alternative. Sorting waste on trains is an important way of reducing our ecological footprint and an example of how we can make a simple and active contribution to protecting the environment during our journeys.

Several years ago, we already installed waste sorting containers on our trains. All waste is carefully sorted by our stewards either on board the train or after bulk collection at the final stations. By sorting properly, we encourage the recycling and reuse of materials.

We support local suppliers, growing and producing food in accordance with traditional and sustainable agricultural methods and the local economy. Working with regional suppliers enriches our offer with authenticity and quality. Regional suppliers offer fresh and high quality products. Food is transported shorter distances, which contributes to its freshness and quality. At the same time, by shortening the food's journey to our passengers, we reduce the emissions that would have to be produced in transit.

We work primarily with Czech producers and suppliers of only the highest quality food, beverages and snacks, which you will find on our on-board menu.

We have expanded our onboard menu to include purely plant-based dishes that are suitable for vegetarians and vegans. This gives our passengers not only a much wider choice, but also an alternative to meat dishes.

For our part, this is not only about expanding choice, but also about directly supporting the reduction of our carbon footprint. The production of plant-based diets is less water intensive and contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions (source: WWF). Plant-based diets have a positive impact on ecology and the environment.

We are behind the Trails of Love project. Together with the Czech Tourist Club and Kofola a.s., we are organising events for volunteers throughout the Czech and Slovak Republic, so that each of us can personally contribute to the restoration of nature.

Trails of Love is a project dedicated to the repair and maintenance of damaged or difficult-to-use nature trails. It aims not only to promote a positive approach to nature conservation and tourism, but also to highlight the value of community proactivity.

We are continuously active in reducing our carbon footprint. And we are also devising our own ways to contribute to nature conservation. In 2023, we plan to introduce a new feature that will be available in the ticket purchase process. The booking system will calculate the total emissions produced by the chosen journey and allow the passenger to offset this burden financially by contributing to nature restoration. Green simply means green in our country.

From July 1, RegioJet passengers who receive free Rajec spring water with every train ticket will be able to enjoy this water from bottles made of 100% recycled plastic. This cooperation between RegioJet and Kofola a.s. is proof that companies can be active players in protecting the environment and finding sustainable solutions. The environmentally friendly packaging of Rajec water in 100% rPET bottles represents a concrete step towards a more sustainable future.
